Fines for speeding could rise from £60 to £100 under plans announced by Justice Secretary Kenneth Clarke.

The fixed penalty speeding fine could rise by nearly 70% to fund compensation for victims of crime.

Those who fight speeding cases in court could pay up to £120 towards the scheme.   The proposals are part of plans to raise an extra £50million a year for victim compensation.

Clarke said: “Victims in this country must be able to rely on a justice system which punishes offenders properly and ensures that victims who suffer serious consequences are properly helped and supported.

“Cash compensation should be better focused on blameless victims of the most serious crimes and more support for victims should be funded by offenders rather than taxpayers.”

Andrew Howard, the AA’s head of road safety, said: “Many take the view that enforcing motoring law is about raising money and this reinforces that view.”
